New Delhi:Two days after 6 Kashmiri students at Mewar University in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh were allegedly beaten up by locals, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has urged all states to ensure safety of Kashmiris everywhere.
"I appeal to all states to ensure the safety of all Kashmiris anywhere in the country. They are also equal citizens of India", Rajnath said.
Six Kashmiri students enrolled at the Mewar University in Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan were allegedly thrashed by locals on Wednesday.
A Kashmiri student at the Mewar University was quoted as saying, "At least 9 fellow students were beaten up with sticks and bats around 6 pm on Wednesday near Gangrar town after locals got to know that we are from Kashmir. At least 6 of them were injured."
The university authorities, however, said that students had got into a brawl with some locals while they were on their way to a market near the university in Chittorgarh.
The Kashmiri student's claim that around 250 university colleagues from his state even skipped dinner in protest was denied by the university.
A Mewar University official said, "These students had dinner and there was no protest. Classes are being held as usual."
Police have lodged a case against unidentified people.
