J&K Govt hires 2 firms for same job

Srinagar, May 19: In a move that authorities themselves are unable to explain, a second firm is being hired to structure junctions in Srinagar. New Delhi-based traffic consultancy and solutions firm Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Ltd (DIMTS) is currently working in coordination with the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to develop 42 junctions in the city to streamline traffic.
The Rs 15-crore project is funded under the centrally-sponsored Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
However, the government is mulling to hire another New Delhi-based firm, Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC), for the same job, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Khan, told The Kashmir Monitor.
Asked for the logic behind hiring two companies for the same work, Khan didn’t have an explanation.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic City Srinagar, Sargun Shukla, distanced herself from the project.
“I have not hired anybody. Junction management is either the work of the SMC, or the R&B or the SDA. As the head of Traffic Police, I have no reservations in coordinating with any expert,” she said.
“Whether the government is doing it with one company or multiple companies, I have no say in it; I have no opinion in it. I can only give feedback on the traffic regulation, as we are well aware of the traffic parameters in the city,” she said.
As per an SMC official, after doing a survey of various traffic parameters in Srinagar, DIMTS, would install around a dozen intelligent traffic signals. Five of the 27 signals already in place would also be developed into intelligent ones.
A Joint Control System, the site of which will be identified by the Traffic Police, will also be set up in the city.
A red light violation indicator, the site of which is yet to be identified, will also be set up.
