Hysteria or a reality

There is no greater evil than anarchy. Kashmir has been under the grip of this obnoxious and wicked reign for the past over two weeks with incidents of braid chopping taking place every now and then. Reports of braid chopping at several places across the valley have provided the vested interests every chance to exploit the situation to their advantage. The common reaction to such incidents, which borders with insanity and utter madness, has made situation even worse. The government and common people equally share the blame. The so-called incidents are taking place frequently but there is no apparent effort on the part of the police or any other organ of the government to stop them. Some police and government officials have been quoted that the incidents are not real. These are rather results of the hysteric conditions of the so-called victims. This cannot be outright ruled out. But the pace at which these incidents are happening needs substantive action and evidence—which could through psychological study of the victims by credible professionals and doctors—to convince the public at large. There is general impression that the incidents are taking place for real. There are certain sections in the population who resort to such means for known or unknown reasons. A general complaint, which is largely acknowledged by vast majority of the people, is that some security and intelligence agencies and their sponsored agents are involved in these acts. It is said that the people involved in such actions want to spread fear and dread people across Kashmir to silence the otherwise restive streets. The Separatist leadership comprising of Syed Ali Geelani, MirwaizUmmer Farooq and Yasin Malik, who subscribe this theory, have called for general shutdown today (Monday). The government’s incompetence to stop such incidents has only but corroborated this impression. Since the incidents of braid chopping have taken place almost in all corners of the valley and a particular pattern is followed in all cases, even independent minds find reason in it to believe the public theory. It is too difficult for the police to unveil the exact phenomenon. Since the police personnel belong to the society at large and known the real pulse, they should have cracked it in the very first instance. It is sad commentary on the functioning and acumen of the state police that they could not unfold the mystery behind braid chopping. Common people, on their own, can do what the police have not done so far. Since the so-called braid choppers enter houses in broad day light to commit the offence, it should not be difficult for the inmates to capture the ‘culprit’. It sounds quite illogical that inmates are sitting in kitchen or kitchen garden (as happened in most cases, the braid chopper barges into side room and cuts hair of lonely woman or girl. Either these could be ‘ghosts’, otherwise how a person can barge into a room, cut the hair of a lady and run away without being noticed. The family members come to know about the incident only after the ‘invader’ runs away after committing the crime. This is utter nonsense, and being unreasonable to believe such this theory. In some cases, it was said that the ‘victim’ was alone at the house. How does an outsider (braid chopper) know that the ‘victim is alone at home’. It should be then some family-familiar or a relative (who knows about the family) who had committed the act. All this needs a careful study of the cases. The common people also need to apply their minds, not to believe the rumours blindly. This blind belief as led to the death of a 70-year old person at Danter in Islamabad (Anantnag). More than a dozen persons doubted as being braid chopper fell to the fury of local population at several places. This is the most irresponsible and uncivilized way of protest. While government needs to activate its organs—more particularly police, to reveal the mystery behind such incidents, the common people should go by reason and rationale. Being unreasonable is taking the toll on our intelligence and attitude.
