350 cases of braid chopping reported in JK so far


Srinagar, Oct 12: At least 350 cases of mysterious braid chopping have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Thursday.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Khan, while talking to media, said braid chopping incidents were first reported in Jammu region where 250 cases came to fore. Then in Kashmir, he said, so far, around 100 such cases, mostly from south and central parts, have been reported.
“The incidents of braid chopping first began in UP and Haryana where more than 3,000 cases were reported. The reports that we got from the authorities of these states was that of mass hysteria,” he said.
Khan added that apart from police investigation, the district as well as divisional administration has formed teams of doctors, psychiatrists, social welfare and revenue officers to closely look into the cases of braid chopping happening in Kashmir valley.
He added that the government was “fully alert and trying everything possible” to resolve the mystery.
“We have given orders of intensive investigation in such incidents to get to the bottom of this issue. FIRs have been registered and investigations started,” he said.
The Div Com said the claims of some spray being used to make victims unconscious would too be looked into.
“We have asked doctors to take blood samples of such victims to know what kind of spray was used to make them unconscious,” he said.
Khan appealed people “not to pay any attention to rumour mongers who want to create unrest”.
He also asked people to desist from harassing innocent people.
“Contact police if you suspect anyone,” he said.
