Thousands attend militants’ funerals


Baramulla, Nov 14: Despite heavy deployment of forces, thousands of people on Tuesday participated in the funeral processions of slain Hizbul Mujahideen militant Toib Majeed Mir and his associate Ashiq Ahmed Bhat at their ancestral villages in Northern Kashmir.
Toib and Ashiq were killed in a gunfight at Sultanpora area in Zachaldara Handwara of district Kupwara on Monday evening.
According to reports, Toib’s body was carried by mourners amid intense sloganeering from his home to a local ground where his funeral prayers were held.
Amid pro-freedom, pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans, the slain militant was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard.
Toib, 25, had joined militant ranks last year. He had gone missing in May 2016.
Toib is the fourth militant from the village who has been killed this year.
Local sources said that the body of Ashiq was handed over by police to family on Monday midnight.
Thousands of people assembled at the house of the slain militant who was taken in a procession and then laid to rest at martyrs’ Graveyard Palahalan.
Ashiq, as per reports, was the last militant from Palhalan, the area once known for militancy and stone-pelting incidents.
He is survived by three brothers, two sisters and parents.
According to police he joined militant ranks in April 2015 when he was a Class 10th student. “No FIR stands registered against him in any police station,” said a police official .
