Srinagar: Tourism Department has decided to focus on Thailand and Malaysia to invite foreign tourists after receiving “satisfactory” number of visitors from both these countries in the last two years.
Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, on Tuesday held a meeting with the stakeholders and directed the department to brace up for promotional activities in the next two months.
The department has 25 other states in its list of targets.
“Both Malaysia and Thailand contribute a huge chunk of our foreign arrivals. Besides, we don’t have any advisory in both these countries,” Director Tourism, Mahmood A Shah, said.
He said tourists from both these countries have chosen Kashmir as a destination even during the last two years of “uncertainty” in the valley.
“They came in huge numbers, especially Malaysians. Thailand is on second number in the list,” Shah said.
He said the promotional activities were being organised in collaboration with Travel Trade Federation (TTF), which will begin later this month.
“The promotional activities would essentially include road shows, which we have been organizing since last many years. Last year we held some 10-15 shows in India only,” he said.
Director said the department needed massive promotional campaigns to counter the “negativity” about Kashmir in other states and countries.
“A negative perception is prevailing about Kashmir in outside states. People often feel that Kashmir was like Syria. So we need to visit to these places to showcase our destination and products,” he said.
Chief Minister stated that the department would hold 25 road shows in the country and abroad in the coming two months.
She has directed the department to make the tourism fraternity of the state partners in all the trade fairs in the country and abroad
An official said that the tourism department has also identified various places in India to hold road shows.
“We have some potential areas like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kochi, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Indore, Kanpur, Nagpur, Lucknow and Jaipur, where the promotional shows will be held after December,” he said.
